Microsoft this week added the ability to create slides in portrait mode using PowerPoint for iOS.

The feature is currently available in public beta for Office Insiders on iPhones and iPads running Version 2.68 or later.

“With a shift towards mobile-first content creation, we have heard from many of you that you prefer to do so in portrait mode,” PowerPoint Mobile Product Manager Ekta Dwivedy wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window). “Based on your feedback, we have added the capability to switch in and out of portrait mode when both creating and editing slides.”

To get started, iOS Insiders can open an existing presentation or create a new one, then navigate to the Home tab (iPhone) or Design tab (iPad) to find the Orientation option (hidden behind the Design menu on iPhone). From there, tap Portrait, and watch as the slide in focus transforms from horizontal to vertical, ready for your edits.

Portrait mode, as The Verge points out(Opens in a new window), has been popularized by social media, which is often consumed in a mobile phone’s native vertical orientation; TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, even YouTube all offer portrait viewing of quick-hit videos in an effort to appeal to more users.

There is no word on when, or if, the feature will reach Android devices. According to Dwivedy, “features are released over some time to ensure things are working smoothly.”

“Sometimes we remove elements to further improve them based on your feedback,” she explained. “Though this is rare, we also reserve the option to pull a feature entirely out of the product, even if [Insiders] have had the opportunity to try it.”
